About Ayanna:

Ayanna (aka Melody) started dancing as a teen by attending community dances. Here she learned the basics of some ballroom, country two-step, and line dance. As an adult she trained specifically in these dance styles and believes the cross-training aids in her ability to teach today.

Ayanna first discovered Middle Eastern dance in the mid-90’s. The first class she attended she wasn’t sure if it was for her but once she saw the costumes she was sold. She had to know more and continues to study under some of today’s most talented dancers.

Ayanna has been teaching in various Lower Mainland communities since 2002. In 2004 Ayanna formed her first student troupe, Jawahir. This troupe continues to perform at community events. As troupe director and choreographer, Ayanna enjoys teaching and mentoring new dancers, encouraging them to find their own voice.

Ayanna continues to challenge herself by furthering her dance training and cultural and historic education. Her pre-pandemic training took her to Egypt where she studied with some of the Masters of Belly Dance and looks forward to dancing for years to come.

In addition to being a teacher and troupe director Ayanna has produced events such as her student nights and Belly’s for Boobies, a fundraiser to help find a cure for breast cancer. To further support the dance community, she spent several years volunteering her time and serving on the Board of Directors of the Middle Eastern Dance Association (MEDA). As a past-President continues to support this fantastic organization.
